In the next few months the regulatory response to the financial meltdown will define the shape of the financial services industry for decades to come, just as the Glass-Steagall Act defined US banking in the post-depression era. But will the legislators produce the right type of regulation or even choose the right regulatory targets? Is it practical or even possible to produce effective bank regulation in an integrated international environment? This seminar will equip participants to understand one of the most important controversies affecting anyone who works in or with the financial services industry. Changing regulation and the role of new regulators will affect the role of financial intermediaries and financial intermediation, the profitability of financial intermediaries, compliance, training and reporting requirements, competition between and amongst commercial and investment banks and between bank and non-bank entities and compensation. At the end of this session, participants will be better equipped to anticipate and understand regulatory changes, and benefit from an enhanced understanding of the emerging competitive landscape in financial services.
